Mrudula comes from a traditional Hindu family. A computer engineer by education, she has had 8+ years of professional work-experience in Analytics & consulting in the BFSI domain.

She was working on this idea of a few years and the maternity break provided a trigger for her to operationally launch oPandit, whereby, she left the corporate job for good & took full-time plunge into the entrepreneurship.

How did you decide to start your venture – “”?

Inquisitive by nature and a thorough learner throughout, Mrudula has an inherent curiosity for ‘Hows’ & ‘Whys’ of everything and the same holds true for the spirituality and the religious rituals. Driven by the need to get into the logic and reasoning behind the rituals & practices, the idea of starting an impactful venture touching the Indian culture was in her mind since the last 4 years.

Clearly identifying the market gap and deciding upon the business model to serve the identified market gap was something on which she worked for long. And then, the maternity break and the inability of her last employer to extend the maternity break provided the trigger for her to operationally launch oPandit in May 2015.

The groundwork and research led to the launch of a full-stack professional platform which provides a ‘one-stop solution’ and the ‘convenience factor’ to the individuals, families & businesses alike for performing Dharmic Vidhis in their homes and offices.

Going ahead with the Vision of ‘preserving (meeting the existing demand) and reviving (serving the latent demand) the Indian culture’, oPandit has now completed one year with loyal customers and a strong word-of-mouth goodwill coming its way.

What are the key challenges you face in your job?

‘The challenges are multi-layered and multi-fold’, says Mrudula.

On a personal level, the opportunity cost of quitting a high paying job and starting up on your own is quite high.

oPandit is an operations company. Transitioning from a comfortable AC cubicle job to an on-the-ground venture has its own set of challenges and needs shattering the glass ceilings across various functions.

Matching the expectations of the customers as well as the Pandits, counselling the customers on the rituals, cutting away the myths and misconceptions in the religious space are only some of the challenges in this space and what serves you well is lots of patience, calmness and most importantly, knowledge.

Most of the pandits have highly appreciated and even supported this venture. However, some of them initially viewed it as some kind of threat. It then makes for a very interesting and an exhaustive two-way dialogue on getting everybody on the same page that oPandit is a professional platform and is there to actually revive the ‘Paurohitya’ profession.

What keeps you going?

‘The strong urge and motivation to preserve and revive the Indian culture and that I am able to contribute my bit to it is what keeps me going’, says Mrudula.

How do you see yourself evolve going forward?

Currently operational in Mumbai, suburbs and Thane, Mrudula is looking to expand oPandit nationally and internationally.

Also, she has recently launched a platform to educate kids on Vedas, Puranas and Upanishads and other ancient Indian scriptures focusing on Imparting Education, Instilling Sanskars. This new vertical of hers has a big national and international market, waiting to be tapped by way of an authentic & ‘true to its core’ solution provider.

What is one advice you have for anyone else wanting to start something on their own?

Mrudula believes you need that fire in your belly to be able to go out there and start something on own. Everybody has an inherent ability and the acquired skill-sets. Understand the market, the market gap and map it with your own inherent inclinations and the skill-sets and just…‘Roll Out’.

“The Hand That Rocks The Cradle Is the Hand That Rules the World” – it is time for women to set themselves up as the role models for their children. They need to do something that even their children can take inspiration from.

In this age where internet is omnipresent, is all so powerful and makes the world flat, there are many opportunities that make it really easy and feasible for women to network and reach out. It’s time women leverage it to their own advantage.
